In September 1861, the Spanish steamship “La Unión” was sailing off the coast of Sisal when an explosion in its boiler area caused a sudden fire. The vessel, which had set sail for Havana, sank less than two nautical miles from the port, leaving behind one of the most significant shipwrecks of the 19th century along the Yucatecan coast.

Decades later, underwater archaeological research confirmed its identity and revealed that this steamship was linked to the forced relocation of Maya during the Caste War period. Today its remains rest on the seabed as a silent testament to a complex stage of regional history.
